Being lately in Yalta I heard that the recent meeting Yanukovych-Medvedev in Sochi was one of the worst. Worst, which means that no agreement on a single customs territory has been reached and, what’s more, there was a fuss that ended with Yanukovych’s words: “I will not trade in my country’s sovereignty”. This memorable declaration was to be preceded by a dialogue, which, if it got to WikiLeaks, would beat all previous denunciations.
And then suddenly we read about the next meeting during which the presidents, while freely walking, admired the beautiful gardens in Zavidovo near Tverskaya. In addition, although it is not exactly sure, they agreed on a new gas contract. Let me remind you that Yulia Tymoshenko is locked up in jail for signing the previous agreement.
So, what’s going on? In my opinion the Russians sensed that Ukraine would have trouble during final negotiations on the association agreement with the UE. So, they are brandishing an olive branch, showing that the bear is not as frightening as we might think.
If my interpretation is true, then we, Europeans, as well as many Ukrainians have a problem.
